HGov: Summer Assignment Chapter 4

Bill_of_Rights-978766490The first ten amendments were added to the Constitution to safeguard civil liberties and civil rights. The Bill of Rights defines rights and liberties in broad, abstract terms. These rights include freedom of speech, religion, and privacy. However, these rights are constantly being balanced against competing individual rights and society’s collective interests, making these increasingly complex and important in American politics.

It took many years for the Supreme Court to apply the Bill of Rights to the actions of state and local governments. The judicial branch interprets the first ten amendments and applies them to actual circumstances.

1) Chapter 4: Civil Liberties. Read pages 104 – 139
