Students will now take on the roles of newly elected or reelected members of the U.S. House of Representatives and will experience the process of trying to pass a series of bills. They will begin by learning their roles and helping to organize the new session of Congress. Each student will play the role of the congressperson described on his or her role card, even if the party affiliation on the card does not reflect the student’s own political beliefs.

Party members who want to hold one of the party leadership positions should have strong leadership skills, be able to speak in front of others, and be good at persuading others. Each party votes for its leaders. For the majority party, the person with the most votes will be speaker of the House. The one with the second most votes will be majority leader. The one with the third most votes will be majority whip. For the minority party, the person with the most votes will be minority leader and the one with the second most votes will be minority whip.
